Ugly on-field spats

An ugly on-field spat ensued between RCB bowler Mitchell Starc and Mumbai Indians' batsman Kieron Pollard during an IPL game in Mumbai.



The ugly incident saw Pollard advance menacingly at Starc before throwing his bat which, luckily, hit the turf well away from the bowler.



Delhi boys Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli got into a spat during an IPL match in 2013. An angry Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper, Virat Kohli, did not leave the ground after being caught and Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir marched up to him.



At Perth in November 1981, Dennis Lillee and Javed Miandad were involved in an incident which does down as one of the most undignified incidents in Test history.



During the match Miandad went off for a single only to find Lillee blocking his path. After a verbal exchange, Lillee went ahead and kicked Miandad on his pads. A furious Miandad charged towards Lillee with his bat lifted high above the head, as if to hit him.



During the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final between France and Italy Zinedine Zidane  head butt Marco Materazzi in the chest. It was later discovered through interviews that Marco Materazzi had insulted Zidane's sister, which led to Zidane's heightened anger and reaction. In 2010, Zidane said that he would "rather die than apologize" to Materazzi for the headbutt in the final.



Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh was banned for three Tests after the International Cricket Council ruled that he racially abused Australia's Andrew Symonds during a Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Australians complained that Harbhajan called Symonds a "monkey" during the match.



Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth were in news for days after it was claimed that Bhajji slapped Sree during an IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab on April 25, 2008.



During Australia-West Indies Test series in late '90s, Australian player Steve Waugh, who sized up the towering Curtly Ambrose by hitting balls across the rope, said: "What the f*** are you looking at?" To which Ambrose charged towards him only to be stopped by captain Richie Richardson.



In the 2013 BBL, Marlon Samuels threw his bat over Shane Warne's head following an argument. Warne was banned for one match and fined, and Samuels was reprimanded for his role.



Ramnaresh Sarwan and Glenn McGrath exchanged personal remarks in the extreme that could well have led to blows.



Chris Gayle shadowed Michael Clarke like a football defender, shoving and mouthing off before throwing a ball at him which went for four overthrows during the 2006 Champions Trophy.



Michael Clarke told James Anderson to "get ready for a broken f***ing arm" during the 2013-14 Brisbane Ashes Test - a pleasantry that was picked up by the stump microphone.



In 2010, South African lock Bakkies Botha head-butted New Zealand halfback Jimmy Cowan during a Tri-Nations rugby tournament match and was subsequently suspended for 9 weeks.



In th history of Australian football, perhaps the most violent match in AFL took place on June 5, 2004 Round 11, at the MCG between Hawthorn and Essendon. The fracas was described by Tribunal Chairman Brian Collis, QC, as bringing "football into disrepute". This match would enter AFL lore as the Line in the Sand Match.



The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has banned Shah Rukh Khan, the Kolkata Knight Riders owner, from entering Wankhede Stadium for five years as a result of his scuffle with security guards after the game between Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians on May 16, 2012.



Shah Rukh was accused of trying to walk on to the field of play after the game and MCA officials lodged a complaint against him the Marine Drive police station. They also said he had been drunk and abused officials. SRK, however, denied being drunk and said he was reacting to the "obnoxious" and "unpardonable" behaviour of officials at the stadium.

Michael Holding kicked down two stumps at the striker's end in Dunedin in 1979-80 after umpire John Hastie turned down his appeal.



England seamer Simon Jones threw the ball at the stumps but instead hit Hayden on the chest. Batsman Hayden reacted angrily but Jones apologised immediately and again after the match.



International footballer for the French national team, Eric Cantona launched a 'kung-fu' style kick into the crowd, directed at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, a fan who had run down 11 rows of stairs to confront and shout abuse at Cantona.



During the India - Pakistan match in the Sahara Cup in 1997, Inzamam-ul-Haq was restrained by security officials as he charged towards one mega phone weilding Canada-based Indian who kept up a remorseless barrage of insults on the cricketer.



Gautam Gambhir and Kamran Akmal were caught in a very ugly battle of words during the Asia Cup in 2010.



Another very unfortunate incident was when Afridi and Gambhir badly abused each other after a clash when Gambhir was running to take a run while Afridi was standing on the pitch after delivering the ball.



In December 2012 Ishant Sharma abused Kamran Akmal which made him angry and both came face to face for verbal attack.



During the Dec 2010 ODI When Harbhajan Singh came to bat Shoaib Akhtar made him angry by raising voices at him.



During the 1992 edition of the World Cup, Miandad added another feather to his cap as a crowd entertainer, when he performed three perfect monkey jumps, mimicking Kiran More while the latter gaped helplessly at the master of antics.



On August 12, 1984, a game between the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres turned into what journalists wrote as "one of the worst beanball wars of modern times", starting with Braves pitcher Pascual Perez hitting Alan Wiggins with the game's first pitch, followed by four attempts by Padres pitchers to hit Perez in retaliation.



Newcastle team-mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were sent off for fighting each other in the Barclays Premiership defeat to Aston Villa at St James' Park. The astonishing bust-up occurred in the 81st-minute as Bowyer and Dyer squared up after a heated exchange and the former appeared to throw the first punch.
