The grand celebration at Eden Gardens felicitating the Kolkata Knight Riders for winning the IPL Championship for the second time was eventually marred as utter chaos prevailed outside the stadium.

The police resorted to lathicharge and a near stampede injured several people, including many women. Five injured, including two women and a child, were taken to the SSKM Hospital.

Not only fans but policemen were also injured when the mob attacked them with brickbats.

The team KKR reached the venue at around 2.30pm as it got stuck at various points with spectators trying to get a glimpse of the cricketers.

Many, however, could not enter, as the stadium was packed to capacity. Some with valid passes were also denied entry.

The state government had announced that entry passes will be available at police stations and at Eden Gardens too.

But many enthusiasts failed to get the passes from the thanas, so many came directly to the venue as the CM had said that after initial screening, sports lovers without any pass would also be allowed in.

Meanwhile, Mamata who was in North Bengal had to cut short her trip and take a private plane to attend the felicitation. She is expected to fly back to North Bengal to attend further meetings, after the felicitation is over.

RAF were posted outside Eden Gardens and the entire area looked like a battlefield.

Five injured, including two women and a child, were taken to the SSKM Hospital. Not only fans but policemen were also injured when the mob attacked them with brickbats.

Bleeding from heads and limbs, people ran helter-skelter to avoid blows from police batons.

Meanwhile, state sports minister Madan Mitra said, "There was nothing that the police could do as it was a tsunami of people. The police had to keep them under control to avert bigger mishaps."

The police was forced to resort to lathicharge to control the crowd which tried to bring down the security barricades to enter the stadium.

While about 60,000 people managed to enter the stadium thousands jostled in the surrounding Maidan area to gain entry which was 'free' but only with 'complimentary passes' from police stations in the metropolis and through CAB affiliated clubs in the state.

The stadium authorities opened the gates at 11:00 am to enable supporters to enter well ahead of the start of the programme scheduled at 1:00 pm, which was delayed.

People started queueing up at Eden Gardens from as early as 9:00 am as all roads led there.
