Monsoon in Delhi: In Pics

Hours after the Met department announced the possibility of the southwest monsoon making an appearance in Delhi within this week, several parts of Delhi witnessed heavy showers that continued till Wednesday evening.

However, with rainfall distribution still quite patchy, the Met department said it may still take a day or so for the system to formally arrive in Delhi.

Delhi is witnessing consistent easterly winds. These are moisture-laden and have resulted in an increase in humidity levels. There is also a local cyclonic circulation over this region due to a western disturbance.

"Wednesday's rain was not related to the monsoon since it was not evenly distributed. It was possibly a result of the WD. Unless rainfall distribution equalizes, it will be difficult to pronounce monsoon onset. The low pressure system that is needed to push the monsoon further into northwest India looks a little weak right now," said a Met source.

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Met officials said that there was not likely to be any change in temperature on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the northern limit of the monsoon continued to pass through Veraval, Surat, Nasik, Wasim, Damoh, Lucknow, Bareilly, Ambala and Amritsar.

Met officials said that conditions are favorable for the system to further advance into some parts of Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan during next couple of days.

Rain and thundershowers may occur at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Friday and at a few places thereafter. Rain and thundershowers may occur at many places over Punjab till Thursday and decrease thereafter.

There are chances of rain and thundershowers at one or two places over Haryana including and Delhi till Thursday which may increase the following day. Maximum temperatures may fall by a couple of degrees over the area during this week," said a Met official.
