Veteran actor Farooq Sheikh, who was a major contributor in parallel cinema during the 70s and 80s, passed away of a heart attack on December 28, 2013. The actor was in Dubai, apparently for a concert, when he suffered the heart attack on late Friday night.

Born on March 25, 1948 to Mustafa Sheikh and Farida Sheikh in Gujarat's Baroda district, Farooq Sheikh was eldest of five children.

In his early days, Farooq Sheikh was active in theatre and did plays with IPTA. In 1973, Farooq's brush with Hindi cinema came with MS Sathyu's Garm Hava. The 70s and 80s were the most creative years of Farooq, who dabbled in both commercial cinema and parallel cinema.

Farooq Sheikh is best remembered for his roles in Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Katha, Noorie, Chashme Buddoor and Kissi Se Na Kehna. He worked with directors like Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Muzaffar Ali and Ketan Mehta.

Farooq Sheikh made a successful pairing with Deepti Naval and together, the duo delivered many hits, which are still fondly remembered by fans.

Along with Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Amol Palekar, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval and Smita Patil, Farooq Sheikh brought a new revolution in Hindi cinema during the 70s and 80s.

After making a tremendous contribution in theatre and films, Farooq Sheikh made his foray into small screen. During the late 80s and early 90s, Farooq Sheikh acted in several TV serials. Shrikant and Ji Manriji are among the few.

He hosted the popular TV show Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai, in which he interviewed celebrities.

His last film was Club 60 and before that, he was seen playing the role of a father to Ranbir Kapoor in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Farooq Shaikh is survived by wife Rupa Jain and two daughters: Shaista and Sanaa.
