She today suffered a massive heart attack after which her condition turned very critical, doctors attending on her said.After having stabilised for the last 2-3 days, the condition of the 82-year-old actress had started deteriorating since last night and in the morning she suffered a heart attack, the doctors said.The doctors had put in some emergency measures.The actress was being given non-invasive BIPAP regularly since last night.Sen was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic on December 23 following a respiratory tract infection. Later she was treated in a private Intensive Treatment Unit for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.Sen, who has been living the life of a recluse in a south Kolkata apartment, has starred in memorable Hindi films like Devdas, and Aandhi and Saat Paake Bandha, Agnipariksha, Saptapadi and Deep Jwele Jai in Bengali.The screen goddess of yesteryears, who had been living a life of a recluse, was often compared to Hollywood actress Greta Garbo.She was born on April 6, 1931 in Pabna, Bangladesh. Her father Karunamoy Dasgupta was a headmaster in a local school and mother Indira Devi, a housewife.She did not want to be an actor but her husband Dibanath Sen, a marine engineer, asked her to take up the acting. After a few rejections, she finally made her debut with Saat Number Kayedi in 1953. However, her first film was the unreleased Shesh Kothai in 1952. She formed a successful on-screen pair with Uttam Kumar, with whom she worked in 30 flms. They acted in many iconic films, such as Sare Chuattor, Harano Shur, Saptapadi, Pothe Holo Deri and Agnipariksha. Soon, Suchitra Sen became the queen of the box-office. During her prime, she even rejected the roles offered by Satyajit Ray and Raj Kapoor. She became the first Bengali actress to be awarded at an international film festival. She was also awarded the Padma Shri in 1972. However, she allegedly refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005. Sen quit films in 1978 and lead a hermit-like life. She is survived by her actress daughter Moon Moon Sen. Her grand daughters, Riya and Raima Sen, are also actresses.
