Khushwant Singh dies at 99

Renowned Journalist and Author Khushwant Singh passed away at the age of 99.



``He was fine and passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, `' his daughter Mala Singh said.



Khushwant Singh was an Indo-Anglian novelist, Singh was best known for his trenchant secularism, his humor, and an abiding love of poetry.



 According to TV reports, his cremation will be held at Lodhi Crematorium at 4pm on Thursday.



 Born on February 2 in Hadali, now in Pakistan, Singh wrote classics like "Train to Pakistan", "I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale" and "Delhi".



Singh, a Sikh, came into prominence after India got independence from Britain in 1947. He was a lawyer-turned-diplomat-turned-writer.



He was editor of several literary and news magazines, including the Illustrated Weekly of India as well as two newspapers, the Hindustan Times and the National Herald, through the 1970s and 1980s.



 Singh, who was a Member of Parliament from 1980 to 1986, was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 but returned the decoration in 1984 in protest against the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar by the Indian Army.



 His autobiography, "Truth, Love and a Little Malice", was published by Penguin Books in 2002.



 In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.



At 95, he wrote the novel "The Sunset Club".



His non-fiction works include the classic two-volume "A History of the Sikhs", a number of translations and works on Sikh religion and culture, Delhi, nature, current affairs and Urdu poetry.



The author released his last book, The Good, The Bad and The Ridiculous, in October 2013. in this pic, he is seen with Gursharan Kaur, wife of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.



He is survived by son Rahul and daughter Mala.
