BJP general secretary AmitShah has been declared as the new BJP president on Wednesday.

Home minister Rajnath Singh announced in a news conference that he was stepping down as the BJP president and declared Shah as his successor.

Senior party leaders, in consultation with RSS leadership, had cleared Shah's name as Singh's replacement.

Shah's no-nonsense style of functioning - which includes doing a thorough homework before meetings to ensure that he has his way - has won several admirers within the BJP and the RSS. Within the party, his detractors have fallen silent after the BJP won an unprecedented number of Lok Sabha seats in UP.

Shah's name for the post was in doubt initially considering the cases against him that dates back to his stint as the minister of state (home) while Narendra Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat. Party insiders are confident that Shah will get a clean chit from the special CBI court in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Kausar Bi and Tulsi Prajapati fake encounter case.

The Supreme court on Wednesday issued a notice to Bollywood actor SalmanKhan on Rajasthan government's plea challenging a high court decision which had stayed his convict.on in a blackbuck hunting case.

A bench headed by Justice S J Mukhopadhaya asked Khan, who was sentenced to undergo five-year jail term by a trial court, to file his response within four weeks.

The state government approached the apex court against the order of Rajasthan high court which had, on November 12 last year, stayed his 2006 convict.on in the case and paved way for him to apply for a British visa.

Under British immigration rules, any person convict.d for more than four years is not eligible for a visa. Since the actor was convict.d for five years, he was denied visa by the UK embassy.

The passports of Indian convict. are stamped with the word "convict."

Khan was convict.d and sentenced to one-year and five-year prison terms in separate cases of poaching of two Chinkaras at Bhawad and one blackbuck at Ghoda Farm (Mathania) on the intervening night of September 26-27, 1998 and September 28-29, 1998 respectively.

The actor had approached the high court in 2007 seeking a stay on his convict.on by a trial court so that he could file a fresh application for a British visa.

Besides Khan, actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam were accused of poaching near Jodhpur during the shooting of the film 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.
