In a setback for Jayalalithaa, the Supreme Court has dismissed her appeal against prosecution by income tax department for not filing tax returns from 1991-94.

The SC on Thursday allowed the trial court to proceed against Jayalalithaa.

The central government through the income tax department had filed a criminal complaint in 1996 under Section 35-B of the Wealth Tax Act, alleging that Jayalalithaa had failed to file returns in due time for the assessment year 1993-1994.

In spite of statutory notice, she "willfully and deliberately" failed to file returns, resulting in an ex-parte assessment order, it said.

It's unclear if Google will have to absorb a charge to account for the difference between what it paid for Motorola Mobility and what it is getting back. The Mountain View, California, company may address the issue Thursday when it announces its fourth-quarter earnings after the market closes.

Lenovo already is among the smartphone leaders in its home country of China, but it has been looking for ways to expand its presence in other markets, especially the US and Latin America. The company had been rumored to be among the prospective buyers for BlackBerry Ltd. when that troubled smartphone maker was mulling a sale last year.

Buying Motorola will enable Lenovo to join Apple Inc. as the only major technology companies with global product lines in PCs, smartphones and tablets, putting Lenovo in a better position to become a one-stop shop for companies to buy all their devices from the same vendor, said Forrester Research analyst Frank Gillett.

England lost the opening Twenty20 international in Hobart on Wednesday after narrowly failing to chase down Australia's massive 214-run target.

The Australians were always in the box seats, with the tourists on 176 for nine with an over left.

But some prodigious late hitting by Ravi Bopara got England to within 13 runs of the target at the finish.

Bopara smashed seven sixes and two fours in his unbeaten 65 off 27 balls but paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile bowled the Australians to victory with four for 30 off his four overs.

Joe Root scored 32 off 24 balls and opener Alex Hales hit 22 off 12 balls for the beaten tourists, who have only won one limited-over international on their hapless tour of Australia.

Cameron White was named man-of-the-match for his 75 off 43 balls as Australia set England 214 to win.

White put on 106 with opening partner Aaron Finch (52 from 31) as the Australians came out with all guns blazing.

It's a nice feeling to be back and it's something I've worked hard for, to get the opportunity playing for Australia since I last played," White said. "England are a dangerous side and they bat really deep in the order, and with the short boundaries here at Bellerive the game was never really won. Ravi batted really well.

ManchesterCity fired a warning to their title rivals as they swept to the top of the Premier League with a ruthless 5-1 rout of 10-man Tottenham on Wednesday.

Manuel Pellegrini's side took advantage of Arsenal's draw at Southampton 24 hours earlier to knock the Gunners out of first place and open up a one-point lead in the race for the title.

City's victory was tinged with controversy after they were awarded a dubious penalty that produced their second goal and a red card for Tottenham left-back Danny Rose, but there was no questioning the visitors' supremacy at White Hart Lane.

Sergio Aguero had opened the scoring before Yaya Toure's penalty and further goals from Edin Dzeko, Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany underlined City's superiority.

Etienne Capoue got one back for Spurs, but this was a major statement of intent from City, whose celebrations were slightly dampened by the injury that forced Argentina striker Aguero to limp off just before half-time.

Daniel Ricciardo is determined to be more than a "one-hit wonder" as he prepares to take the hottest seat in Formula One as quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel's teammate at Red Bull.

In fact, even the one hit has yet to come for the smiling Australian who graduated from sister team Toro Rosso following the departure of compatriot Mark Webber to sportscar racing with Porsche.

The Perth-born driver has yet to finish higher than seventh in a Formula One career that started in 2011 with now-defunct HRT but he now stands on the cusp of the big time with the dominant team of the last four years.

"I haven't set any expectations in terms of where I'd like to finish," the 24-year-old told reporters at the first pre-season test in Jerez, where he is due to get behind the wheel of the new RB10 on Thursday, when asked about his targets.

"I'd love to get a win, to stand on the top step would be amazing. But just to go through the year, continuing to learn and to try and match Seb at least at some point. And to really set myself up at the front of the grid, not to be a one-hit wonder so to speak," he grinned.

Vettel, only two years older, has won the last four championships in a row and showed last year that he can be a ruthless competitor.

His win in Malaysia, when he passed Webber for the lead despite the team asking him to hold station to save fuel, has gone down in Formula One lore for the ignored instruction 'Multi 21' - which meant car 1 should stay behind car 2.

Ricciardo may be a de facto number two but he has already made sure he will not have that number on his car by selecting the number three instead.
